Background of the Study
Job satisfaction plays a crucial role in the retention rates of healthcare workers, including nurses. High levels of job satisfaction are associated with increased motivation, better patient care, and reduced turnover rates (Bello et al., 2023). Conversely, dissatisfaction can lead to burnout, absenteeism, and high turnover rates, all of which negatively impact healthcare delivery (Adebayo & Musa, 2024). In the context of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, job satisfaction has emerged as a critical issue, particularly due to the challenging working conditions, limited career growth opportunities, and inadequate compensation (Okonkwo et al., 2023).
Nurses who experience dissatisfaction may seek employment elsewhere, leading to staffing shortages, increased workload on remaining staff, and decreased quality of care (Aliyu & Salisu, 2023). This study examines the effect of job satisfaction on the retention rates of nurses at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, aiming to explore the key factors that influence job satisfaction and retention in the nursing profession.
Statement of the Problem
The nursing profession in Nigeria faces a high turnover rate, which is particularly pronounced in teaching hospitals like Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria. High turnover negatively affects healthcare service delivery, as experienced nurses leave, leading to a loss of institutional knowledge and a reliance on less experienced staff (Bello et al., 2023). Despite the importance of job satisfaction in nurse retention, the factors contributing to dissatisfaction and their direct effect on retention at the hospital have not been comprehensively studied. This research aims to fill that gap by exploring the relationship between job satisfaction and retention rates.
